Editorial policy

RegPeek guides are written to help UK drivers and used-car buyers act on the rules as they actually stand. This policy explains how that content is produced and how to challenge it.

How guides are researched

  1. We start from the question a reader is trying to answer and give the direct answer first.
  2. We check the current position against official guidance before writing, rather than relying on what was true in a previous year.
  3. We explain the practical consequence — what to do, in what order, and what it is likely to cost or risk.
  4. We link to related RegPeek guides and to the free MOT, tax and SORN and mileage checks where they help the reader finish the task.

Use of official sources

  • Rules, fees, penalties and deadlines are taken from GOV.UK, DVLA and DVSA guidance, and the specific pages used are listed at the foot of each guide.
  • Source links open in a new tab so you can verify a claim without losing your place.
  • We do not invent statistics, prices, regulations or outcomes. If a figure cannot be attributed to an official source, it is left out.
  • We do not present guides as legal advice, and we do not guarantee an outcome in any individual case.

Review and updates

Guides show their original publication date. When a guide is genuinely re-checked or materially changed, we show a “Reviewed and updated” date and update the structured data to match. We do not backdate, stagger or refresh dates for appearance. Guides covering fees, MOT rules and vehicle tax are prioritised for review when official guidance changes, for example at a fee change or a rule change announced by DVSA.

Corrections

If a guide is wrong, we fix it rather than quietly removing it. Substantive corrections are reflected in the review date, and where a correction changes the practical advice we say so in the text. Data shown by the vehicle check itself is a separate matter, because it comes from third parties — see data sources and limitations.

Reporting an error

Send the page address and what you believe is wrong through the contact page. Include the official source you are relying on if you have one; it makes the correction much faster. Guides are produced by the RegPeek Editorial Team — more about who that is on the about page.

Independence and commercial content

The basic vehicle check is free. The paid full car history check is a one-off purchase, and we only mention it where it genuinely answers the question at hand. We do not accept payment to place links or to change the conclusion of a guide, and RegPeek is not affiliated with DVLA or DVSA.
