Every registration you enter returns the free preview: make, model, year, colour, fuel type, engine size, road tax status, MOT status and expiry, and the full MOT test history with recorded mileage, defects and advisories. For a quick sanity check on an advert, that is often enough.
The £4.99 full report is for the moment you are seriously considering handing over money. It is a single payment for that one registration, taken through Stripe, and the report is generated only after payment is confirmed. Access is restored in the same browser, so reloading the page or coming back later does not cost you again.
Why these checks change a purchase decision
Outstanding finance is the most expensive thing to miss. If a car is still subject to an agreement, the finance company can retain a legal interest in it even after you have paid a private seller in full. A stolen marker is a similar problem in a different shape.
Write-off categories tell you the vehicle was declared uneconomical to repair or structurally damaged at some point. Some repaired category cars are perfectly sound, but the marker affects value and insurance, and a seller who has not mentioned it has already told you something. Keeper counts and plate changes fill in the gaps: an unusual number of short ownerships, or a private plate swapped on and off, is worth asking about.
What a report cannot do
A history check reads records; it does not inspect the car. It will not reveal unrecorded accident damage, poor repairs or mechanical wear. Treat it as one of three steps alongside a physical inspection and a check of the V5C, service history and matching identification numbers.
